The cost of web design and development broken down
Since much of the cost of web design is variable I’m going to use percentages.
Information Design 10 - 20%
First thing we do is gather all the information you’d like to put into a website, many discount shops skip this step. In doing this essential planning step can help bring up other questions and clearly define the scope of a project.
Visual Design 25 - 35%
We view see the visual design as a medium to consume the information we’ve helped arrange and design. Think of how when you visit a restaurant, everything serves the purpose of consuming and enjoying your meal. From the table to plates, cutlery and even the ambiance of the establishment all serve to make your visit enjoyable and allow you to complete all of your goals, in this case eating and visiting with friends.
Likewise we’ll spend a fair amount of time trying to design a visual solution by merging your information, branding and your visitors goals into a design that is sharp and usable.
Production 35 - 50%
Going back to our restaurant story above this is back in the kitchen, mixing raw technology to deliver to you and your customers the “meal” (information and visual design) we came up with in the first two steps.
We actually stream line this as much as possible by having prepared peices of code and technology ready to go and don’t need to rebuild common components to websites, like contact forms, and traditional page layout.
Bug Fixing / Support 10 - 15%
In today’s modern world where we have to design for up to 5 or 6 web browsers, Firefox, Safari, Chrome, Internet Explorer 8, 7, and even 6 sometimes. Because of this, after the site is complete we’ll go through the site in other web browsers to make sure the visitor receives an acceptable experience across all major browsers.
Misc Client Contact and Communication 5 - 15%
No surprise here, but meetings and collaboration does need to be accounted for in the web design and development budget.
Clear communication and proper planning is the best way to keep unforeseen web development costs down.
