Effective SEO - It's about playing a game you can win!
More often than not a client will want to go after the most broad and most competitive keyword phrase. Understandably there is a huge market in those broad, highly searched, keryword phrases. However, it's a long and expensive climb to the top. While I would never discourage someone wanting to make that climb, I would also advise them to make some short term goals. If we are going to win the state championship, we better win some season games along the way right?
Choosing your SEO battles
When you're just starting out on a SEO campaign I recommend going after soft markets with lower search volume, but ripe for the picking. A bad example might be "Auto Glass", that's a pretty broad term, but what I like to do is break it up into a few sub keyword phrases:
- Location + Keyterm
- Minneapolis Auto Glass
- Blaine Auto Glass
- Location + Keyterm + Relevant Verb
- Minneapolis Auto Glass Installation
- Minneapolis Auto Glass Repair
See what I did there? We took a very broad keyterm, localized it and defined it further. We can also take it a bit of a new direction as well, in our case the term "Minneapolis Windshield Repair" might also be effective as a soft SEO market.
The Take Away
If by reading this you did nothing more than burn a few minutes and maybe damage some brain cells, I'm truly sorry. However, it was my intent to simply show that dominating the softer fringe SEO terms can prove just as effective to your bottom line, and cost significantly less.
I also must disclose that we do some SEO work for a local Minneapolis Auto Glass Repair company.
